Remove the sound from a video
To publish a video without its background noise, prepare a cut for editing or add different music, removing the audio track is the first step. ffmpeg does it in a few seconds, without touching the picture.

How to use it
- Install ffmpeg if you haven't already.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing your file.
- Copy the generated command, adjust the file names if needed, then run it.
- Open the resulting file to check the result.
What the command does
The "-an" option (audio none) tells ffmpeg not to keep any audio track. The "-c:v copy" option copies the video without decoding it. The result is almost instantaneous, even for a long video.
Add a different soundtrack
Once the audio is removed, or directly from the original video, you can add music to it.

Frequently asked questions
Does the picture quality change?
Not with the default option: the video is copied as is, and only the audio track is removed. The resulting file is also a little smaller.
Can I replace the audio with music?
Yes, with the dedicated page that adds or replaces a video's audio track in a single command.
When do I need to re-encode?
Rarely: only if copying fails because the video codec is not accepted by the output format, for example a video from an old AVI being saved as MP4.
